Welcome to the USPCA Region 2 website. Region 2 consists of canine teams from North and South Carolina.

The United States Police K-9 Association Inc., is a non-profit organization striving for the establishment of minimum standards for Police K-9 dogs through proper methods of training.

Properly trained Police Dogs are taught to do the following:

Search buildings and areas for unauthorized persons.

Track Criminals and search for lost children, etc.

Search for evidence dropped by criminals in flight.

Search for hidden explosives, narcotics, chemicals, illegally taken game and cadaver substance.

Pursue and apprehend, with minimum force, criminals fleeing a serious crime and arrest.

Apprehend on command only and in Protection of the Handler.

Police K-9 dogs, properly trained and handled, give Law Enforcement officers one of the finest non-lethal aids in the prevention and detection of crime.

The United States Police K-9 Association is the largest and oldest active organizations of its kind.

Note from the President:

I hope everyone is ready for summer and the humidity of North and South Carolina. We had a successful Patrol Dog trial in Cleveland County. Sgt. Mark Self and his officers did a great job putting on their first ever trial. We are hoping they will be willing to host again soon. I just returned from Colorado Springs for the National Detector trial. What a great venue for a dog trial! Congratulations to our own Kevin Johnson, the new Southeast National Vice President.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you in the fall at Carolina Beach for the PDI trial and Wilson for the PDII and detector trial. Look for the registration forms on the website. Also, get your memberships renewed as soon as you can for 2009.

One thing that we discussed at the National Executive Board meeting was the relationships between the USPCA and other organizations. The USPCA is the oldest and largest organization of its kind. We have the toughest standards of any organization in the country. For this reason, when you go to court and present a certification from the USPCA, it carries some weight. However, the USPCA can sometimes be characterized as rigid and not willing to adapt or have some openness to other training ideas. As members of the best K-9 organization in the United States, we can open ourselves to other ideas and still maintain our standing and reliability. I encourage you to be open-minded when it comes to others’ training seminars and opinions. As we continue to get better, the USPCA needs to partner with others but at the same time continuing its drive for excellence and high standards.

On a sad note, National President Jim Matarese’s mother died last week. Please keep Jim and his family in your thoughts and prayers over the next many weeks.
