Welcome to the USPCA Region 2 website. Region 2 consists of canine teams from North and South Carolina.

The United States Police K-9 Association Inc., is a non-profit organization striving for the establishment of minimum standards for Police K-9 dogs through proper methods of training.

Properly trained Police Dogs are taught to do the following:

Search buildings and areas for unauthorized persons.

Track Criminals and search for lost children, etc.

Search for evidence dropped by criminals in flight.

Search for hidden explosives, narcotics, chemicals, illegally taken game and cadaver substance.

Pursue and apprehend, with minimum force, criminals fleeing a serious crime and arrest.

Apprehend on command only and in Protection of the Handler.

Police K-9 dogs, properly trained and handled, give Law Enforcement officers one of the finest non-lethal aids in the prevention and detection of crime.

The United States Police K-9 Association is the largest and oldest active organizations of its kind.

Note from the President:

Wow! I can’t believe it is Fall already. I think our K-9 Unit here in Raleigh has finally recovered from the demanding preparation for the National PDI Trial. We had a great turnout for our trial. There were 111 handlers here from all over the country. Many departments in our region showed up to compete. Region 2 put in a team of Calvin Jeffcoat, Jason Cummings, Kevin Johnson, Stafford Brister and Bret Neal and finished fourth. The winner, Laz Cabrera, finished with an amazing score of 697.5. To finish off the week we had a great public demonstration before about 2000 citizens. I want to offer a big thank you to the Wilmington Police Dept. for bringing their helicopter to Raleigh to participate. I think everyone enjoyed the week in Raleigh and the hospitality of Region 2 members. The Executive Board did pass the new rules for the Explosive test that will be in effect January 1, 2009. The changes are posted on the website.
At this point, there is not a host for the Fall PDI so everyone will have to wait for the Spring trials that will be hosted by Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department. Fall PDII trials in Winston Salem are quickly approaching. There are registration forms here on the website. Spring PDII trials will again be in Aiken, SC and the Fall 2009 PDI trials will be hosted by Carolina Beach PD.
We have a great training seminar January 26-28 at Fort Fisher near Wilmington, NC. This will be a working seminar, but trainers are welcome. Stewart Hilliard, dog behaviorist and trainer will be our main instructor, but we will also have Wayne Stewart and Jim Matarese to conduct scenario training. The cost will be $200 and will include lodging and food. If you do not need lodging the cost will be $50. The seminar will be limited to 40 dog teams. The registration forms are here on the website.
You must be a USPCA member to attend. Remember, membership runs from January thru December, so make sure it is current.

On another note, there is a great series on Animal Planet that airs on Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m. The show, K-9 Cops is a documentary on the Saint Paul, MN K-9 Unit. Their K-9 Unit is a member of the USPCA. Check it out if you get a chance.
